THE HEEL
the heel is done over half of the total stitches, beginning with the first
stitch of the round. It is knit in stockinette for as many rows as you have
stitches
TURNING THE HEEL
the stitches on the heel are divided into three equal portions. in every
knit row you are knitting together the last stitch
of the middle portion
with the first stitch of the outside right. on the return row - you are
again knitting together the end stitch of the middle section with the first
stitch of the outside part. (for example with 24 stitches = 3 x 8 stitches.
knit 15 stitches, knit together the 16&17th stitches. Turn (slip the first
stitch) purl 6, then purl 2 tog, turn and continue this manner keeping the
total of 8 stitches in the middle. when you have used up all of the outer
thirds - you are done.
GUSSET
divide the heel on to two needle and pick up stitches along the edge of the
heel flap, so that you can knit around. Now you can decrease on the right
and left sides of the heel flaps at the instep.
DECREASING THE GUSSET
Now, knitting around , with the first and second stitches of the gusset
knit together (SSK or K2tog) every other row
until you are back to the original number of stitches.
TOE SHAPING
Dividing your stitches into four equal numbers, then look at the top and
the bottom as two equal parts. you will be shaping on the 2nd and 3rd
stitches from the end of the needle. For the first 1/3 of the decreases,
decrease every third row. For the middle third of the decreases, decrease
every other row, then decrease every row until you are to 4 or 6 remaining
stitches, then pull through the working yarn and finish.
Actually, more of a philosophy than a real pattern.
BASIC GENERIC RULE OF THUMB FOR OPAL
Many of our knitters are using U.S. Size 1 or 2 needles. I was using the size 2's but recently discovered that Size 1's
work better for me now, and I'm coming up with a very pleasing texture. Not too loose or too tight. Depends on your own individual taste. I'm getting a gauge of 8 stitches per inch on Size 1 needles.
For my small foot, I cast on 52 stitches. A rule of thumb number of casting on stitches seems to be:
Med Adult: 60 [64]
Large Adult: 72
Hope these tips will help you out. Just grab some needles and knit yourself up a tiny swatch and play around with the yarn. You have
plenty of yarn as one skein will knit up a full pair of socks plus a lot left over. Many of us are getting
a pair of baby socks to match our
adult socks out of the one skein. HAVE FUN!!!
