    USA SLIPPERS
    by Soxie

    MATERIALS:

  • - 2 skeins #321 Opal (or any fingering weight yarn of choice)
  • - One set of Five Size 6 dpns (or size to obtain gauge)
  • - Marker Stitch Holder Tapestry needle.
  • - Optional) Small amounts of Red and White yarn for ties.
  • - Optional) 2 red heartshaped buttons.
  • - (Optional) Alphabet beads to spell U. S. A. (2 each)

    GAUGE: 5 Stitches = Inch

NOTE: The yarn is double stranded throughout the pattern. This created a very "cushy" and elastic texture. Although I intended them to be a Small Size, they are so elastic, they will stretch to fit a large. Also, if you would prefer to knit a sock rather than a thick slipper, only one skein of Opal will be required.

    BEGIN SLIPPER:
With two strands of yarn, Cast on 44 stitches. Join yarn to form circle being careful not to twist yarn.
    Work a K2, P2 ribbing for 1 1/2 inches (or desired length)
Knit all rounds for approx. 1 more inch (or desired length)

    BEGIN HEEL FLAP:
Divide stitches evenly and place the 22 instep stitches on stitch holder.
Work all 22 heel stitches and all rounds of heel flap in Garter Stitch (Knit all rows).
Knit until heel flap measures approx. 2 3/4 inches (or desired length).

    TURN HEEL:
End heel flap on a wrong side row.
Row 1: (Right side) Knit 11 stitches, Place marker (to mark center of heel), Knit 4 stitches past marker, K2tog,
    K1, Turn.
Row 2: Purl back to 4 stitches past marker, P2tog, P1, Turn.
Repeat these two rows until all stitches are worked. End with a knit row.
NOTE: This creates a square blunt heel which I prefer. Please feel free to use your own favorite heel turning method instead.

    GUSSETS:
Pick up as many stitches as is required along left side of heel flap; knit the 22 instep stitches; pick up same amount
of stitches along right side of heel flap as you did on left side; knit remaining heel stitches. Knit one complete round.

    BEGIN DECREASE:
Rnd 1: Knit to last 3 stitches at end of needle #1. K2tog, K1. Knit around to first 3 stitches on needle #4, K1,
slip 1, K1, psso, knit remaining stitches.
Rnd 2: Knit all stitches around.
Repeat these two rounds until you have 44 original amount of stitches on needles.
Continue to knit all rounds until you are within 2 inches of desired foot length.
Next Rnd: Decrease 4 stitches evenly around (40 stitches)

    ROUND TOES:
Rnd 1: *Knit 6 stitches, K2tog. Repeat from * around.
    Knit 3 rounds
Next Rnd: *Knit 5 stitches, K2tog. Repeat from * around.
